What does a deep tissue massage do?

i got a deep tissue massage on my calf and was wondering what it was for and also what does it do also ive been doing lots of exercises that stretch the muscles in my legsWhat does a deep tissue massage do?
As the name implies, it involves working deep into the tissue layers - muscle, fascia, etc., in your body. Lots of people get trigger points (knots) in their calf muscles and also hold a lot of tension there, and deep tissue work would help to release some of that. It can be uncomfortable to experience, but it's worth it because everything feels so much looser afterwards. What does a deep tissue massage do?
it goes deeper than a regular massage

I am a Massage Therapist and I give 12 hours of deep tissue a week- yet Im still gaining weight! Why?

This is something that boggles my mind- for 7 months now I have been giving 12 hours of deep tissue massage, and breaking a sweat mind you, and if anything ive gained weight (not all of it is muscle). It doesent make any sense. I used to lose weight if i went to the gym 3 times a week for 1 hour. Now Im doing physical exercise for 12 and not seeing one bit of difference. I eat a bit more on the days I work- but im not gorging myself. I am wondering how many calories you do burn from massage? I know several massage therapists who have to go to the gym aside from massaging for weightloss as well- why is it we work out bodys to the max for these massages and yet it doesent burn fat? that seems unfair...

Thank You,

A.I am a Massage Therapist and I give 12 hours of deep tissue a week- yet Im still gaining weight! Why?
Hi -- I am a Licensed Massage Therapist practicing for years and have gained weight too...

I tell ya -- for me, my weight has always been a struggle. I've gained, lost and gained and lost again. I eventually decided that I would like to figure out the true emotional component that drives me to gain weight and/or stay heavy. Massage has been a wonderful gift for bringing up my own issues.

I still struggle with putting up a guard. I don't know if it's self-sabotage with the work or just blocking my own heart but my weight struggle continues the more I massage. I can't speak for you -- perhaps you can ask yourself if this has always been a struggle.

I went to an AMTA convention a few years ago and met this very nice LMT with a weight issue. She said something to me that was quite interesting: that weight issues have to do with the second chakra and coming into one's own power. I believe this -- I believe that the more I have this delusion that I have to take responsibility for others and come into my own power...the more I tend to block it with my own insecurity and low belief of myself. I understand these are all delusions and that, ultimately, we're just giving up control to a higher power. Yet, I think there might be something with this that keeps the weight on.

Again...I can't speak for you -- I am working on me but I hope that I have written something to spark you. If you would like, please feel free to write to me privately at Michelenergy@yahoo.com.

Good luck!

you need to do cardio to burn the calories. I'm sure you have built some muscle doing massage, but you need to get moving to lose the fat.
I would suggest a cleansing diet. I did this and lost 12 pounds and 19 inches in 9 days. I continued and lost 29 pounds in a month. I like the program since it works by giving your body nutrition through protein shakes with digestive enzymes and vitamins and then cleansing out the toxins. We get toxins in our bodies from pesticides, preservatives, water, pollution, medications, food additives etc鈥? These toxins enter our bodies and get stored in our fat cells. To shrink the fat, we need to get rid of the toxins through cleansing. The program also has a natural diet pill to help your metabolism and curb cravings. It works and it works fast. My skin has improved from the cleansing. It is pricey but worth it! I think cleansing is really important to health and weight loss. Work on your diet. Think--do you eat a chocolate bar or protein bar when you are tired? What do you do when you are not massaging? AFter all you are only working 2-3 hours a day? Are you sitting around eating and drinking?

Do the massages and go to the gym and watch what you eat.
Work on your bad habit! Such as eating habit, sleeping habit etc. Let me see, several days ago, a friend told me such thing.Usually,i meet her in the site Pubspa.com.u can Communicate with spa enthusiasts around the world .

What kind of massage do you think feels best, Swedish, Shiatsu, deep tissue, or other?

Deep TissueWhat kind of massage do you think feels best, Swedish, Shiatsu, deep tissue, or other?
Hot pebble massage is the best. What kind of massage do you think feels best, Swedish, Shiatsu, deep tissue, or other?
I'm a pretty muscular man. Deep tissue with hard pressure is the only way outside of a rolling pin that my muscles feel relaxed.
Sweedish, a light one. But I do have to say the best massage I ever got was on a cruise, I had a head, neck, and sholder massage. It was the most relaxing thing ever. :) Now I want to go get another one!
a free one!

  • Is it possible for massage to cause diarrhea (ex: 2 hours of deep tissue/trigger point)?

Started about one hour after I got home from the 2 hour deep tissue / trigger point massage. Drinking lots of water. Is it possible for massage to cause diarrhea (ex: 2 hours of deep tissue/trigger point)?
I know with deep tissue/Swedish massages your body releases lactic acid into your system. Lactic acid is found in yogurt, sour cream, buttermilk, etc. If those products have upset your stomach before, then it's quite possible that the massage was the cause of your diarrhea.

A massage is like running. Make sure you don't eat 2 hours before and make sure you stay away from sugary foods. It will help ease your stomach a bit.Is it possible for massage to cause diarrhea (ex: 2 hours of deep tissue/trigger point)?
I don't know for sure but I think it could.

Deep tissue or hot stone massage?

which one should I get? Ive gotten a deep tissue before and I LOVED it! I tore my shoulder blade and it gets really sore sometimes, so I love massages.. but the hot stone looks SO relaxing and amazing.. what do you think?Deep tissue or hot stone massage?
Deep tissue massages and hot stone massages are both really relaxing. However, if you have a history of a torn muscle, I would recommend a deep tissue massage. Deep tissue massages take all the tension out of your body and allow you to get the amount of relaxation you need from a massage. Hot stone massages are good, but compared to a deep tissue massage, I don't really think there is a comparison.Deep tissue or hot stone massage?
i think a deep tissue would be better for your shoulder problem but hot stone massages are very relaxing
    deep tissue....no comparison.

hot stones is not much different than a heating pad, only they cool fast.
I'd choose deep tissue. I wasn't real impressed with the hot stones.

Seasons Greetings!!! I am trying to give both of my sons (25 and 30)

a really great gift for Christmas, so I thought of giving them a deep tissue back and/or body massage! I've heard that they are wonderful if done right and if office and massage room has good atmosphere!

Does anyone know of a really, really good deep tissue massage therapist close to the Crofton, MD. area?

(Close to the KMART on RT. 3 and RT. 424)

Does anyone know about how much they charge?

One that won't cost me my arm and my leg? lol :)

If you know of one, will you PLEASE give me their addresses and if possible, their phone numbers also? They will be the gifts that keeps on giving! Both of my sons have some back issues from the hard jobs they have and I think it having at least one session would do them a world of good! So if anyone knows of a good one, please respond asap since Christmas is getting closer by the day and time is running out!! Thanks so very muchWhere can I find a great DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE THERAPIST?
I do not know of the area but I would suggest that you go to a chiropractic office. The treatments will be cheaper and possibly more effective.
