What could be the reasons for a headache following a deep tissue massage?

-interesting that you should ask this question because I have a throbbing headache myself which I am trying to understand why. I'm going to go drink some water......maybe I am dehydrated.

Regarding a connection, if you were lying in the prone position with your head face down, you may have developed a sinus headache if there has been any recent sinus drainage blockage. Other than this thought, perhaps pinching a nerve, but I think you would have experienced that as a sharp and sudden sensation. What could be the reasons for a headache following a deep tissue massage?

Thanks for the BA. I hope you are feeling better. Merry Christmas!

If it was a really good massage, it probably relaxed a lot of tense muscles in your neck and shoulder area. If these tensed muscles were constricting your blood vessels in any way and that pressure was released, the resulting vasodilation can cause a temporary drop in blood pressure. Vasodilation is actually a major contributor to migraine headache pain.

Sudden relaxation of vascular tissue and vasodilation is also why some people get headaches after orgasm. Weird, huh?
Huge connection!

Massages are like work outs, if you don't drink water after one you will become sore. Massages bring new blood into your muscles and release toxins into your body. The toxins need to be flushed out. Drink water, 5-8 glasses after the massage and before bed. Take your body wieght and divide in half and that's how many ounces of water you are suppose to drink in one day. Massages are healthy for you! If you want to continue feeling good after one- drink water. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Good Luck!
I get those, too..I was told that it was due to the release of lactic acid in the muscles when they are torn during massage. I don't know how true that is, but drinking lots of after a massage seems to fix it.

the massage therapist should have told you to expect that, and told you to drink lots of water so that wouldn't happen. it's toxins releasing...
